Dispute Bad Credit
Each of the three major consumer credit reporting companies - Equifax, Experian and TransUnion - have their own guidelines as to how to proceed in a dispute of a negative credit item on a credit report they provided. Depending on the credit reporting company, the possible means of dispute are online, by phone or by mail. Disputing these negative items yourself can be a very involved process. To begin the dispute process, you must obtain a copy of your credit report. Read the report carefully. Highlight any items you don't recognize or that appear to be incorrect. Each credit report has a report number. You will need this number to start the investigation process. Also, before you contact the credit reporting company make sure you have the following necessary information on hand:
- Your social security number
- Date of birth
- Current address
- Company name of the disputed item
- Account number of the disputed item
- Reason for your disputed item (such as, it's not your account, or the debt is paid)
- Any corrections to your personal information (address, phone number, etc.)
The credit reporting company has 30 days to investigate your credit dispute and respond to you. Another point worth mentioning is that during the investigation process, you may be required to submit additional documentation. You may also have to correspond with the orignal creditor yourself to resolve your credit issues.
